ABOUT

KYOTO LETTERSCAPE is a visual archive documenting Japanese retro typography found on the streets of Kyoto.
From traditional hand-painted signs to fading letters, these typographic fragments reflect everyday life, craftsmanship, and local design sensibilities shaped over decades.
As buildings are renovated and materials weather away, many of these letters quietly disappear.

Once speaking loudly to the city, now whispering their stories
— through such often-overlooked lettering, we hope to offer a moment to look at the city anew.
All materials are collected by walking through the streets, observing, and recording their present state.

KYOTO LETTERSCAPE is self-funded, and we hope to continue documenting and preserving these disappearing visual memories.
